Senator Flood Announces Passage of Bill to Aid Norfolk Nursing College

Senator Mike Flood of Norfolk, Speaker of the Nebraska Legislature, announced today the passage of the State's mainline budget bill, which includes financial support from the State for the new College of Nursing in Norfolk, a joint project between the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Northeast Community College. The bill, LB 315, will now go to the Governor for his approval. If signed by the Governor, LB 315 will appropriate $425,000 in operational support for the upcoming fiscal year and $1,460,724 in 2010-2011.

Senator Flood said: "Today is a great day for northeast and north central Nebraska. Our area has the most significant nursing shortage in the State and the need for this project is evident. I am thankful to the many folks who have made this project a reality, but would like to specifically recognize the members of the Legislature's Appropriations Committee. The Committee took a leadership role and included these operational funds in their recommended budget. This project is an unprecedented opportunity to address our healthcare workforce shortages."

The planned UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division will be located on the Northeast Community College campus in Norfolk along Benjamin Avenue. Most of the $11.9 million it will cost to construct and equip the joint state of the art facility has already been raised through private fundraising efforts. The new facility will annually serve approximately 500 students ranging from Basic Nurse Aid to graduate-level education. The first classes at the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division will begin August 2010.

Senator Flood concluded: "Generations from now, access to quality healthcare will be no less of a priority than what it is today. Without it, a community simply cannot thrive. With this project and partnership, we can take real satisfaction in knowing our efforts will bear fruit--both now and well into the future."
